Frequently Asked Questions

What is teak?
Teak is a tall, sturdy, evergreen tree indigenous to the tropical climate of Southeastern Asia. Indonesian Teakwood, the favorite among shipbuilders in centuries past for its durability, is a tight-grained hardwood with a naturally high oil content making it impervious to the constant salty wind and water, withering sunlight, and lashing rains of the untamed seas - or the wild possibilities of your own backyard. Teak weathers gracefully, maturing to an elegant, silvery gray over time.

Do you use Plantation Teak?
Yes, all of our teak is plantation grown and handmade in Indonesia. Plantation teak is replanted after cutting to ensure the future growth and survivial of the trees.

Can I see teak furniture at your Austin location?
Yes, our warehouse is located in Austin, Texas. We're open Monday through Saturday from 10am to 6pm and Sundays from 12noon to 6pm.

What if I'm not satisfied with my teak furniture purchase?
At SimplyTeak.com, we are so sure you will be completely satisfied with our quality product, that we are announcing our 30-day money-back guarantee. If you are not satisfied with your purchase, for whatever reason, you may return it for a full refund within 30 days of receipt of goods. Not only does SimplyTeak.com offer this superb service to our online customers, we will also pay for the return shipping. Goods must be returned in original condition and original packaging.

What kind of maintenance does teak furniture require?
Almost none. You can just let it weather. It will age like a fine wine. Every few years you might want to lightly sand it. That will take off the slight roughness and some of the gray.
Some people like to oil their teak. That doesn't hurt anything, in fact it gives it a finer, reddish look, but it does mean you have to keep it up. We recommend repeating a light oil treatment every six months. Even that's really easy, you just wipe it in with a rag. No staining, varnishing, all that mess.

Besides starting with top-quality teak, what else do you do to ensure the quality of the teak furniture?
We ship all our pieces to the customer fully assembled. Other places add a surcharge for that. But we like to do it for free. We make sure everything fits right before it goes out the door. It's less trouble for the customer, and less trouble for us because we don't have to depend on the customer to follow assembly directions. In addition to shipping our furniture fully assembled, we also pay for all shipping costs.
We don't use nails or screws to assemble the furniture. We use what's called "mortise and tenon" construction, which is a kind of tongue-and-groove method that also uses dowels and wedges to secure the various pieces together. Screws can loosen up as the furniture ages. Since the dowels are also made of teak, over time they really bind to the other pieces and so the furniture gets tighter instead of loosening up. You don't have the maintenance problems that you have with other kinds of construction.
With our high-end customers we also work with a small number of interior designers that we have come to trust.

What are the risks of buying teak furniture direct, or from someone you don't know?
Well, of course, you've got the issue of the grade of teak you're buying. It's not that easy to tell the difference between Grade A and B. You can sometimes use Grade B in chairs if you make them right, but often the difference won't show up for a while, with weather and warping. With Grade A you'll see a quite consistent coloring. Where there are variations, they still remain in the same color family. The variations don't jump out at you. The whole piece is "of a piece."

Why is teak better than pine, cedar, or other woods for outdoor furniture?
Teak is a tropical hardwood that weathers well outdoors. It has oils that prevent it from absorbing too much water. It doesn't split or crack, or get spotty like other woods. It does weather, but that just makes it harder. Teak turns gray as it weathers but it doesn't get splintery - it stays smooth. It doesn't rot, it lasts a long time.
